Regional Olympiad on IWRM 2019

For six years, the Kazakh-German University annually holds an Olympiad in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) among students from Central Asian countries. Thus, contributing to capacity building of future specialists from Afghanistan.

 

The Olympiad was held under the auspices of the "Central Asia Youth for Water" ("CAY4W") network, with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. This year Global Water Partnership (GWP) provided help in update of the database of contest questions, which is now based on the GWP Toolbox.

Purpose Of The Olympiad:

The main goal is to provide an opportunity for students to learn a tool that is used all over the world and develop a dialogue between future specialists about the world practice and aspects of IWRM, by creating conditions for our young professionals to communicate and discuss in a professional language. It will be based on knowledge of the basic principles of international and national water law and theoretical foundations of IWRM.

This year, thanks to the efforts of national coordinators, the Olympiad was held for the first time in all countries of Central Asia and Afghanistan. From April to May 2019, national-level student Olympiads were held at partner universities of KGU and the winners of the first stage were determined. According to the requirements of the organizers, the participants who took first places at the national Olympiad arrived in Almaty, Kazakhstan to participate in the regional IWRM Olympiad. The regional Olympiad was held as part of The first Summer School on the Aral Sea.

First place in the final stage of the Olympiad was taken by a student from Afghanistan, Fazolrahman Bahig. The audience award was awarded to Haidarov Aziz from Uzbekistan.
