The sustainable development of the region largely depends on the future generation; educated youth of our region could act as a locomotive in the sustainable development of all CA region. For this reasons, there will held an expanded student contest within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals developed by the United Nations.
The student contest will serve as a basis for creating conditions for young specialists in Central Asia to communicate with each other and with the colleagues from other countries in a language that is understandable to all – the language of progress and professionalism.
Due to the measures taken to prevent COVID-19, we decided to hold the first (national) stage of the student contest in an online format. Students will compete in one of three sections:
1. Integrated Water Resources Management in Central Asia;
2. Climate Change and Clean Energy;
3. Infrastructure and Industrialization.
With the support of the Global Water Partnership (GWP), the database of questions for the first section was updated based on the GWP Toolbox. The main goal of the section is to enable students to learn a tool that is used all over the world. It is expected that the Olympiad will be a way to develop a dialogue between future specialists about the world practice and aspects of IWRM. This section of the Olympiad will be held under the auspices of the Central Asian Youth Network for water resources "Central Asia Youth for Water" ("CAY4W"), with the support of the Swiss Agency for development and cooperation.
Along with water resources, the topic of climate change is very significant now. The questions in the second section are aimed at improving the understanding of the relationship between greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, what consequences climate change can cause on the planet, and in particular in Central Asia, what measures can be taken to mitigate climate change, including the development of alternative energy, as well as adaptation to climate change.
In order to achieve the sustainable development and empower people around the world, it is also essential to develop transport, irrigation systems, energy supplies, and information and communication technologies. Industry, developed infrastructure, and innovation are driving economic development, social stability for the entire world, and Central Asia in particular. These aspects of development will be available for study and familiarization in the preparation of the third section.
The winners of the first stage (held in May 2020) from each country will be invited to participate in the Regional contest, which will be held in Almaty in August 2020, within the framework of Aral Sea summer school.
